Life is too short for discontent!

In our Order, we pay close attention to the reasons our Applicants give for their interest. We want to know what has encouraged them to approach our Order and start the process of joining us.

Applicants have given us many reasons for their interest in the EMO UK - a love of the Egyptian Mysteries, an interest in the esoteric, a fascination with Masonry and Masonic Symbolism, a background in other forms of mystical tradition that place them in sympathy with us, our inclusive stance, and many other reasons - and we are always happy to hear them. It confirms the importance of our work as an Order and organisation, and the tangible need for what we offer.

We have also heard many voices of discontent from our Applicants - discontent that drove them to seek us as an alternative space; there are many, non-Masons and Masons alike, who have been seeking the esoteric mysteries and deeper studies of spirituality in earnest, and haven't been able to find or access what they seek.

They are tired, of the loneliness of the solitary seeker and the absence of like-minded supporters, social interaction, and spiritual camaraderie. They are tired, of social media battlegrounds where point-proving and brinksmanship replace the genuine transmission of Wisdom. They are tired, of New Age cults of personality where the focus is on exalting the leader of the group and not liberating and empowering the members. They are tired of being in controlling, patriarchal and authoritarian organisations that treat them like the rank and file of a military regiment. They have felt cheated, by the elitism, exceptionalism and obscurantism that has blighted so many Traditions.

Then, they find our website, read our info, look at our videos, and see the excitement and joy we feel in our Egyptian Masonic Works, and they realise that this is exactly the joy of labour, inspiration of heart, and stability of approach that has been missing in their own spiritual or Masonic experiences. The Body of Osiris begins to draw together and revive under the Command of Isis. The Eye of Ra sheds a crepuscular ray. The Heart sings.

This story has been shared with us many, many times now, over the past five years of our existence. We take this deep discontent and spiritual unhappiness very seriously, because we have had the Great Blessing of finding the Joy, Peace and Wisdom of the Works in our Order. It is Joy, Peace and Wisdom that we are happy to share with our new Members, but this is another important thing to remember...

Life is brief, and burns bright. None of us has time to waste on dimmed hopes, false promises, or draining dynamics. We are too involved in the difficult task of processing our own Egos without having to pamper, pacify, or shore up someone else's.

We need to join forces in those wonderful groups and spaces where we are valued, inspired, respected, supported, and most importantly, SEEN. We need to see, support and respect those groups and spaces in return. Then, they and we will prosper, grow, stabilise, and offer the Gift of Joy, Peace and Wisdom more readily to all who are ready for it. Whether you go with us, or another group - go where the vibrations are high, the people joyful, the atmosphere peaceful.

Don't sit in indecision, misspend your attention, misallocate your commitment, or be frightened by "opinion".

The Journey Through The Order

Once upon a time, in a sunny garden in deepest Kent, I was asked: "What's the point of all this? What does all of this lead to?"

The person who asked me had been in Masonry for some years, and I was surprised that nobody had explained to them about the ultimate aims and aspirations of Masonry. I gave as simple an answer as I could, at the time, to such a profound question; now, some years later, I feel compelled to answer this question more openly. We spend time, energy and money when we invest in joining a Masonic Order like the EMO UK - the least we can do is explain the point of it all.

The Great Journey of Masonry - which is synonymous with the Great Work - is frequently described as a Ladder . In Classical Masonry, this is usually associated with the Biblical image of the Ladder of Jacob, but the concept has a much more ancient provenance. In Egypt, the ascent of Osiris from the Tuat to the Heavens was conceived as a Ladder upheld by Thoth and Horus, upon which both Osiris and his aspirants - the Adepts who underwent the regenerative Osirification of their Souls - would ascend to reach the Supernal Realms.

I will speak only in my capacity as guide of this Order, but I will speak nonetheless.
In the EMO UK, our aspiration is identical to that of the ancient Osirian initiates. We aspire, through our Degrees and Rituals, to ascend that Spiritual Ladder of Light, step by step, until we reach those same Supernal Realms.

"But how?" You may ask.

As you will know from elsewhere on this website, our Order is conceived as a Great Pyramid, which divides itself into Ten Mansions. It is our upward progression through these Mansions which, we believe, facilitates this aspirational Ascent. Just as the triangular faces of a Pyramid rise from a square base to an apex bordering on Infinity, we believe our Human Consciousness can make the same journey: from Matter to Spirit .

In the TENTH MANSION of the Symbolic or Craft Mysteries, we are brought into the Symbolic Mysteries, where the whole system is explained and revealed in symbolic fashion; yet we must master the Symbolism, its Philosophy, its Esoteric and Hermetic Science, and the Spiritual Truths to which it leads, in order to properly comprehend that which the first Three Degrees reveals to us. The high point is to become a Master Mason , and then to earn the right to become a Worshipful Master of the Lodge.
In the NINTH MANSION of the College of Perfection, we begin to unfold the perennial arcana to which we have been given access. This is both a philosophical analysis of the Symbolic Systems, as well as an unfolding of the Psychic Faculties which are essential for our inner growth and the widening of our perceptions; to encourage this, we are given the preparatory exercises in Alchemy and Theurgy, and commence the study of Qabalah, Hermetic Science, and Astrology. The high point is the entrance into the Royal Arch of Enoch , which grants us a certain spiritual dignity and stability.

In the EIGHTH MANSION of the Rose-Croix, we find ourselves crossing several key thresholds which lead us steadily and safely out of the Lower Darkness of ignorance and materialism, through the liminal state of awakening, to that Place which connects the Lower Psychism to the Higher Psychism, or Spiritual Consciousness. The high point is the Reception into the Eighteenth Degree of the Rose and the Cross , which is the true gateway to Gnosis.
In the SEVENTH MANSION of the Hermetic Senate, we are finally equipped to analyse and gain competency in the practice of what we have learned so far, and the preparatory and introductory exercises in Theurgy, Alchemy and Astrology advance to a more expert level of operation. The high point is the Elevation to the Hermetic Philosophy , which synthesises the Mysteries of Visible Creation, and its Invisible Forces.
In the SIXTH MANSION of the Supreme Council, we complete the works of the Lesser Mysteries, which embrace and encompass all the essential skills and knowledge required for genuine Masonic Adepthood. The high point of this part of the journey is the Exaltation to the Thirty-Third Degree , which is revealed as so much more than a fancy title, or a participation trophy.

In the FIFTH MANSION of the Sublime Consistory, which is the largest Mansion by amount of Degrees, our spiritual evolution takes a quantum leap forward, as we gradually assume the roles of Knight, Priest and Sage in the High Gnostic and Universalist Mysteries - the Greater Mysteries - which ensoul and underpin the spiritual traditions of the whole world, revealing to us the Mysterious Workings of the Universal Spirit of Holiness in operation among all illuminated beings, and among all nations and cultures. The high point is Assumption into the Hall of Sublime Sages , the Halls of Bliss, where there is rest and repose.
In the FOURTH MANSION of the Mystic Temple of the AA, the Great Work is brought to its ultimate culmination. These are the Supreme Mysteries, the Secret of Secrets , the ultimate synthesis of the Tradition, and of the Spiritual Constitution of the Masonic Sage. Those who enter these Supreme Mysteries "come not forth again".

The THIRD, SECOND and FIRST MANSIONS are exalted spaces, spiritually abstract to those who cannot understand them, where the Leaders and Guardians of the Order and Rite perform their executive and hieratic works in deepest silence. These are the places of the profoundest serenity, for they exist in the Immutable Light where all Opposites are Harmonised - they can neither exist nor function otherwise.

As you can see, there is clear intention behind the structure of the EMO UK, which provides a guide and a mirror for every individual's personal spiritual progress, supported by those who are also on the Great Journey. We do not intend to stand between you and your Divinity - on the contrary, our purpose is to ensure that you cultivate a personal relationship with the Divine, so that you can understand your true origin, and the potential in the deepest part of your nature. This is the purpose of the Mysteries. Such an immense task cannot be completed without stages and degrees to mark our progression; therefore the EMO UK has been created, and is sustained, to assist us.

I cannot share anymore of our Works publicly, as the Veils must be maintained. I just thought this post might help those of you who are curious, or interested to have a clear picture of the Ladder of Light as we conceive it in our beloved and venerable Order.

Harmony Against Hate

Hatred is the child of disharmony and fear

When you give way to Hate, and the wrathfulness, anxiety, fixation and violence that it encourages, you are in a state of chronic and fatal Disharmony. Even if you seek to unite with others who hate as you do, all parties are swamped with all forms of disharmony and imbalance, both visible and subtle. Even if you hide your hatred behind euphemisms, slogans, rationalisations and excuses, still the point and purpose will dissolve in the Light of Reason, and lead to misery, futility and destruction.

Even when you have a genuine cause to feel animosity towards another - for instance, if you are an innocent victim of abuse, oppression, bigotry, violence, or microaggression - it is still unwise to allow this to pitch into the extreme of hatred. Hatred blinds us, manipulates our reason, gives us the illusion of strength and righteousness to hide our weakness and fear from ourselves and others; it leaves us vulnerable to manipulation and radicalisation by unscrupulous forces, making us tools and weapons in an insane war, the high cost of which our Hate makes us incapable of understanding.

In every instance where hatred and oppression of others is a motivator, the results are always destructive, corrupting, demoralising and ultimately futile. Whether your Hate is directed towards a gender, a phenotype, a religion, a culture, a class, or a political movement, it is still a sign of disharmony, imbalance and the infiltration of Evil into the Soul, and the Body. Hatred can topple governments, perpetuate divisions, toxify families, destroy communities, incentivise war, and ruin the lives of good people.

It's time to let it all go.

Harmony, and happiness, comes not only from healthy boundaries, clear reasoning, fair treament and respect both given and received, but also from learning to let go, learning to accept the things we cannot (and should not) control, learning to accept that everyone is actually different ; even biological twins have different bodies, personalities and Souls. Why would we need to favour cosmetic similarities of appearance or background to such a dangerous and extreme degree? It can only be in an attempt to control everything. And such a pathological need for control is based in FEAR.

The human commonalities that unite us are a Chain of Union, not Slavery; our communities are not supposed to be commoditised into a uniform, a product, an exception, an elite, or a badge of honour. The human family, with all its genuine problems, challenges and imperfections, is NEVER improved by Hate.

Only Harmony and Rectitude can bring peace, and these manifest in calmness, good-will, honour, honesty, integrity, faith, and a generous heart tempered with loving wisdom. Be wise. Don't hate.

To The Non-Mason

Seeing through the fog of narratives

To the Non-Mason, the world of Masonry can seem very forbidding: the image of older men in dark suits carrying briefcases has become a stereotype with which we are all familiar. There is also historical persecution of Masons by the authorities, and the contemporary suspicions levelled at Masonry today by conspiracy theorists who associate Freemasonry with the Illuminati, the New World Order and various other fringe phenomena.

What the Non-Mason must understand is that Freemasonry is a tradition and a practice – although it has a common symbolism, it has many varieties, and many observances. Freemasonry is not a single institution, nor a single Order. The most popular obedience is that of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) which promotes Anglo-Masonry, but there are other forms of Masonry such as the Scottish Rite, the French Rite, the Swedish Rite, and our own Memphis-Mizraim. Each of these Rites is perpetuated in its own Grand Lodge and Order, with its own members and rules of practice.

The EMO UK believes that the original Freemasonry – the ancient and primitive form – was always intended to be a spiritual and metaphysical tradition, providing an inroad to the higher mysteries of Alchemy and Hermeticism through the analogical myths and symbols of the Masonic Lodge and King Solomon’s Temple. These analogical myths and symbols were used to teach esoteric principles to the Members, who were trained as Builders of the Mystic Temple. In addition to this, the Egyptian Rite includes highly mystical and kemetic symbols in the Degrees, which unfold the tradition even further. We continue this approach to Masonry; rather than perpetuating a Masonic culture dominated by a particular demographic, or destabilised by political or economic ambitions, we are committed to creating an inclusive, progressive, harmonious and spiritual community; an Order in which the Degrees of the Rite are used to promote both individual and collective evolution.

We urge the Non-Mason to consider our perspective, and to approach us without fear. For those seeking a dining or social club, those types of Masonic Order exist. For those seeking a spiritual and esoteric Masonic Order which values community, equity, spiritual growth and potent initiation, the EMO UK is an excellent choice.

Code Switching

What's Old is New Again!

When we enter different spaces, different company; when we start a new job, or enter a new social group, many of us find ourselves code-switching .

Code-switching is a socio-linguistic development of the natural human instinct to mimic and emulate each other within groups. It can be as simple as changing the language, dialect, or cant by which one communicates, or as complex as the nuances of behaviour, fashion and class norms. The danger with code-switching, of course, is that it always involves the potential loss of one's inherent authenticity . It is also easier to be manipulated or coerced when made susceptible to the social pressures of code-switching, especially when the code itself is connected to status and the expectations of a dominant culture. Everyone loves to feel they belong.

Code-switching happens in the esoteric community too.

The trends and tendencies in the language of the esoteric have altered over the decades, in response to the modular effects of culture, environment, intersectionality and the discourses of philosophy and science. Long before this, the evolution of religious language and church dogma, and then the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, impacted the manner by which esoteric Truths were communicated.

In this current era, we are seeing Esoterica changing its codes, under the influence of the New Age and its unfolding narratives. During the late 20th century, there was a second occult revival, alongside the folk revival, and a love for the ancient paradigms and traditions saw an upsurge in significant and successful efforts to preserve and uncover what remained of the Perennial Traditions of Occultism the world over. Later, in reaction to this, we saw the evolution of the New Age and New Thought movements, which attempted to integrate Science and Spirituality together, sometimes with mixed results.

The marriage of Science and Spirituality is not new, however. Alchemy is the firstborn child of that Marriage, and its chemical, metachemical and parachemical codes are still highly useful and relevant today. Rather than attempting to sound "scientistic" and "evolved" to convince an audience of its contemporary validity and intelligence, Alchemy presupposes intelligence, and seeks instead to communicate methodology, practical application, and the Wisdom which this brings, which has far more value. To know a thing is half the work. To understand and become wise concerning it is the completion of that work.

We think it's important to avoid elitism, exceptionalism, division and confusion in the Mysteries, regardless of the Current and Path concerned. There is but One Divine Process, and the Many Ways to it will tend to converge. Let us give some examples.

When we say Currents , others say Spiritual Rays . When we say Rites , others say Sacred Traditions . When we say Degrees , others say Ascension Process . When we speak of Transmissions , others say Activation Codes . When we say something is a Mystery , others call it a Master Key . When we speak of Egyptian Masonry , we also mean Sacred Geometry (as Masons of Egypt, it is our inherited science after all!). When we speak of an Initiation , others call it an Attunement . When we speak of the Masonic Working Tools , others speak of Sigils and Power Symbols . When we speak of Practical Occultism , others speak of Paradigm Shifts, Synchronicities and Timelines . When we speak of the Lesser and Greater Mysteries , others speak of Christ Consciousness, Bodhisattva, or 5D Vibratory Resonance .

When we speak of our Tracing Boards , others speak of Mandalas . When we speak of Stars and Nodes , others speak of Chakras, Nests, Meridians and Vessels . When we speak of the Great Hermetic Law , we of course mean the Unified Field . When we speak of the Gods or Neteru , others speak of Archetypes and Avatars . When we speak of the Great Architect of the Universe , others say the Great Spirit , the Creator, Divinity, GODDESS, or GOD .

As you can see, it's simply a code-switch; the essence of Soul and Spirit is unchanging. Metamodern trends may change the language , but the Ideas and Forms have always been .

The difference is that NOW, many, many more people are awakened enough to perceive them and gain benefit. It is the duty of EVERY esoteric tradition and every spiritual leader to use their well-preserved wisdom and depth of experience to assist these newly-arrived Old Souls. The world needs Wisdom more than ever!

Technology and practical science have made great advances; this cannot be refuted and everyone has contributed to this. However, one cannot and should not try to replace the Creative Human Soul with the shadow thrown by its glory, whether that is cyber-tech, AI, or non-human emulation. The Tool is not the Mason!

The code-switching cant of a more scientistic and technologically dependent age will never replace the lyrical depth and wise tradition of the Ancient WORD.

Not Like Us

Community is Currency

Hatred, doubt and division are tools for which we no longer have use.

We are ready to let them go. We are ready to move on to a New Condition and State of Being where acceptance of individuality, of uniqueness, of variation is possible without the need to fear erasure or assimilation. In this scenario, c ommunity , rather than attention, is currency.

The principle of Community, which we uphold as a core value of our Order, is as infinitely scalable as the Mysterious Model of the Tree of Life; just as there is a tree mirrored in every leaf, and there is a galaxy mirrored in every solar system, there is the principle of Community in our extended family, in our local environment, in our county or state, in our nation, and between all nations. Nobody has to be the same , nobody has any need to prove their superiority rather than their preferences. There is room and space for all , and there is space for the mutual appreciation, acknowledgement and celebration of every part of the All.

Our Order, as stated previously, is a Mystical Body rather than a political or religious one, but we can see and feel what is happening in the world around us. We're human too.

All attempts at division, whenever they are executed on any level, are based on the assumption that certain things are as incompatible and inimical as oil and water ; yet, when one makes use of Love as a surfactant, or Celebration as an emulsifier, or Empathy as a base, the apparent separation dissolves into Unity. Life shows us bountiful examples of this, and when we see it, we should rejoice! It is one of the best and most creative expressions of our shared Humanity, and our collective genius. It also forges perpetual bonds of mutual comprehension, which is the only cure for all misunderstandings, deceptions and misdirections. The splendour of endless diversity, where everything shares space and contrast without loss of definition, or the sovereign right to exist, is the true Healing and Restoration of the World, the Tikkun Olam .

If you are human, and I am human, and we can share a common set of things we appreciate, that is enough. The differences and contrasts no longer have to be contrarieties or conflicts. They are simply expressions of uniqueness, both personal and collective. Nothing more.

If you are human and humane; if you seek to be caring, fair and just; if you are striving to learn and grow despite your own blindspots; if you love those close to you; if you are fighting not to let anger, or despair, or grief, or trauma, or suffering, turn to hate; if you still feel joy and seek hope - you are like us.

If you are hateful, bigoted, inhumane, wrathful, divisive, and committed to the increase of suffering, grief, oppression, and the division of others - you are not like us.

This is the only division necessary.

The Eternal Now

Starting From The Centre

The Eternal NOW.

Many writers have explored this essential concept; as a philosophical problem; as a psychological state; as an existential reality. Different forms of spirituality have also tackled the problem of the NOW.

Whichever way we approach the idea, we cannot escape it. The NOW is all we truly have.

The past exists only as Memory and evidence of things done. The future exists only as a series of potentials and partial predictions.

Community and society compel us to frame our lives in constant reference to our past actions and our future plans - where do we come from? What have we earned? What are our plans and objectives? What can we expect? Religion and culture are unavoidably rooted in the past, noble as it may have been in many ways; yet the past also contains horrors, tragedies and losses. Science and technology make constant raids on our potential futures, seeking to conquer the limits of physics and nature, with variable results that range from ground-breaking discoveries to devastating errors of judgement. Media throws all of this information up in the air, and creates a maelstrom from it. The brain reels from the complexities of our contemporary life.

Still, we only live and exist - in any real sense - in the NOW.

Every realisation, every discovery, every act of Love or War, happens in the NOW.
It is in the NOW where our liberation lies - our power to transform ourselves and our environment - our power to unfold potentials which are otherwise obscured by past traumas and future fears - our power to change paradigms, heal wounds, discover truths, act with wisdom, and find peace.

In the Hermetic Mysteries, and the Alchemical traditions which derive therefrom, we find multiple images of arcane symbolism. Beautiful depictions of geometry, nature, science, myth and allegory overwhelm the aesthetic senses as we study them - but in all , the Key is implicit. It is the observer , and the NOW in which they exist. The power to perceive and react. The power to know. The Consciousness. The Self. This is the First Key to all the Mysteries.

The Medieval Adepts revealed the cosmology of the Sublime Mysteries in concentric circles , extending from the Earth through the Planetary Zones to the Supercelestial Realms beyond the Fixed Stars. We dismiss this as a primitive grasp of the astronomical sciences, when they 'believed' the Earth to be the centre of the Universe. But for the emergent Human Consciousness, this is existentially true: Earth is the centre of our human experience , until the expansive revelations of Science and the Mysteries bring us upwards and outwards - from the Womb of the Spiritus Telluris, through those ever-expanding Circles of Truth and Wisdom - to contemplate Eternity and Infinity as both a scientific and a spiritual reality. Initiation into the Egyptian Masonic Mysteries is nothing more than a graduation of this universal process of Human Evolution. Only our Human Consciousness is capable of becoming the Point in the centre of the Circle. Just as Earth is placed in the cosmic centre, we also ground ourselves existentially in the Present.

The Gate of the Mysteries is sometimes open; it is sometimes closed. All things oscillate in the Cosmos.

Love is the Soul of Genius

Our Love of Masonry

"Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius."

The words of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart echo through the centuries to our ears, singing even over his musical genius, to speak Truth to us. There is no greater motivation than Love; no greater Teacher, no greater Protector, no greater Initiator.

The world throughout its history has been in constant crisis, which might change form and appearance, but never changes its pattern. Natural accidents and mortal weaknesses aside, the crises of life are invariably caused by human envy, aggresion, fear and weakness. We must learn to grow wiser in our assessments of the conditions of our lives - have we not seen the hijacking of meaning in words and phrases? Have we not seen the insidious attempts to blame the victim, or render the wrong person culpable for crimes which have also been committted by those around them? Have we not seen enough exploitation, division, cruelty and callousness?

The solution has always been the same, and it is the same today. Love.

We have grown cynical, tired and suspicious of Love, without even knowing its power. We have relegated Love to the scrapheap of cultural detritus, along with the belief in Fairies and Dragons. We think - we are too urbane and too enlightened to believe in Love. We parody Love, and throw the term around like a ball at the park. We convince ourselves that it doesn't exist; that it is a chimaera composed of lust, dependency, familiarity and the animal instincts to nest, breed, brood, or feed. We clip the wings of Eros and throw Him into the River Phlegethon.

When we do this, only the Demons of narcissism and sociopathy win. They laugh from their poisonous mouths at our stupidity, as we sabotage our own route of escape. However, we issue a warning to those Demons - we use the term "gaslighting" to describe the frequently-used tool of the narcissitic, the machiavellian, and others of a callous disposition. The term comes from the 1944 film Gaslight with the wonderful Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten and Charles Boyer - let us remember how the film ended!

Whatsoever is dealt out, MAAT will deal back. Your belief in this Truth is not required.

Love is very real , and is the touchstone of the Real. It is only because of our own tendencies towards mistrust, defensiveness and cynicism - and the childhood and relationship traumas which exacerbate these tendencies - that Love only becomes visible to us through extraordinary acts of Self-Sacrifice, Patience, Compassionate Action, or Forgiveness. And, of course, Genius. Love can make good people better. It can supply us with an almost supernatural energy, enthusiasm and inspiration. Love can forgive our human failings and imperfections - a debt which can only be paid back by our remorse and self-improvement.

To be weak is forgiveable. To stay weak is a poor choice. To cause or exploit weakness in another is evil. Love exposes evil to us, because evil is the absence of Love. Evil happens in the world, and in our lives; let us use Love to conquer its effects and heal our wounds. Love of self, love of Nature, love of Equity and Justice, love of those who help and support us, love of the opportunities we have each day to get better, and do better.

In the EMO UK, we do what we do for Love. Love of the +GAOTU+. Love of the Craft. Love of the Egyptian Rite. Love of our Brothers, Fellows and Sisters. Love of the Spiritual. Love of Humanity, and of the Human Soul. Every other Benefit must flow forth from that Love, as must every decision, action and ina ction. It is our Offering of LOVE that is demanded from the +Most High+, not hecatombs of animal sacrifices; only Love, and its beneficent products. Nothing more.

Appropriation of Masonic Symbolism

There has been a great deal of content posted on social media which continues to exacerbate the already problematic representation of Masonic culture.

In the fervid and confusing seas of popular music and fashion, Occulture has turned from a socio-anthropological descriptor, to a trending buzzword, to a scant justification for the wholesale appropriation of Masonic and Esoteric symbolism by various designers, artists and pop moghuls who are simply using the novelty of our traditional imagery to sell albums, promote brands, and fascinate yet another generation of young people, who can be forgiven for knowing little about the historical context of the symbols utilised. This use is not made respectfully, accurately, or with the authority of experience.

Some popular artists are indulging their own fantasies of Satanism, diabolism, cultural profanisation, and Illuminati paranoia, inciting further public mistrust of the venerable institutions of the Perennial Tradition, many of which have made (and continue to make) valuable contributions to art, economy, education, culture, society and charitable endeavours. Masons are constantly framed on television and in the cinema as the "super-villains", spies for the Establishment, tools of the Elites; yet Masonry itself has always borne the brunt of suspicion and persecution during certain predictable periods of political unrest and extremism; this is a well-known historical fact. Masons invariably come from the professional and working classes; the origin of Masonry is to be found in the workers' and stonemasons' guilds of the Medieval period as much as (if not more than) in the Knights Templar, Neo-Platonists and Alchemists.

We are the frequent victims of others' false flags and red herrings. Fear , or scorn , has been our portion.

Information is readily available online to all, which is a wonderful innovation - but just as knowledge is no replacement for Wisdom, neither is information a replacement for comprehension , nor assumption for experience , nor opinion for fact . Worse still, much of the popular online information - especially concerning Freemasonry - is only partially revealed and explained, or is wholly inaccurate. The fact that some still confuse the Illuminati and the Freemasons is another example, as is the fact that there are different groups which use the title "Illuminati".

Freemasonry provides a stable and secure point of access to the great philosophical mysteries and meanings of the Western Mystery Tradition. It isn't only for the traditional conservative or socially mobile; it has progressive, specialised and esoteric branches as well. It isn't just for men; there are Masons of every gender. It isn't just of European origin; it has vigorous branches and Orders all over the world, and it draws its symbolism from every culture. It isn't just living history; it is a Perennial Philosophy and a Science of the Soul, which can only be understood, comprehended and appreciated by those who take the time, and make the effort, to join.

What are the benefits for me?

Social media - Tiktok and Instagram in particular - are awash with multiple perspectives on spirituality, self-development and esoteric knowledge. Every possible perspective is made available to the viewer, both ancient and contemporary. Brave and open individuals from every possible background are finding a wide audience with which to communicate - with which to bond - in the sharing of ideas, concepts, information and experience. Never before in human history has the great ocean of ideas been so globally navigated.

At this time, there is a focus upon individual self improvement, which the media formats support, and we applaud this. There is no Mystery Tradition anywhere in the world that does not require personal effort, study and labour from its Initiates. The advent of spiritual independence is upon us, emerging in tandem with the era of spiritual liberty. Both truth and falsehood are on show, and for the first time, the Power of Discernment is truly in the hands of every individual. It is a great Blessing.

However, we have noticed that in the midst of this intense period of individuality and independence, there is still the call to meet together and form community . The community may be informal, loosely bonded, or have only one or two interests in common, but nonetheless, people are accepting the reality of human gregariousness - we need each other.

We are collectives : families, cultures, subcultures, soul tribes, movements and currents. Our survival and our optimal future depends entirely upon how well we come to terms with each other, practice compassion, support and encourage each other, and respect boundaries and agency. Humanity is one great collective, despite the forces which attempt to divide it. This is why joining an Order is still a viable option for the individual seeker.

There is a great deal of power, protection, security and wisdom to be found in healthy and well organised group works. A toxic group dynamic can be highly destructive, and is best avoided, but the reverse can also be true - a high functioning group can be a spiritual golden ticket .

A healthy and well administrated Order such as the EMO UK provides a certain set of highly useful resources for the individual.

There is Community itself, where we bond and share with those of like mind, which is also tied to the beneficial influence of the Egregore. There is Initiation , which has a direct and incalculable effect upon the psyche and energy bodies of the Initiate, supercharging their spiritual evolution and personal development, at a much faster and stronger rate than in purely solitary practice. There is the practice of collective Convocation, Ritual, Contemplation, and other forms of collective consciousness expansion , which bring us closer to the Divine, as well as the highest aspects of ourselves. There is specialised education and training, especially in an Order such as the EMO UK, which has a full Esoteric, Hermetic and Occult Curriculum. There are the Western and Egyptian Mysteries themselves, which are not easily grasped by reading and watching media content alone (although these can certainly act as learning aids ).

If you are looking for stability, accountability, occult wisdom, spiritual experience, and healthy communion, an Order such as ours is a viable option. You still retain your personal agency, you still need to take accountability, and you still need to do the work on yourself, but you will have a support network, and a source of encouragement to strengthen you, and guide you personally on your Path.

OUR VIEWS ON THE SOUL

"In our Order, we understand the SOUL to be that mysterious Vessel of Individuality, the Vehicle of Perpetual Consciousness, which exists as the ethereal intermediary between the gross BODY and the pure unmanifest SPIRIT of the Human Constitution. It connects to the higher, even as it unites and identifies with the lower, bringing Life, Vitality, Consciousness, Intellect, Memory, Intuition, Creativity, Compassion and Higher Emotions into the incarnated state. We use the Egyptian model of Ten Aspects to the Human ‘Soul’, as well as the Qabalistic Model of the Nephesh, the Ruach, and the tripartite Neschamah.

The Soul cannot be ‘killed’, but it can rise or fall, be pure or corrupt, be free or entrapped, and is subject to the results of all actions and non-actions by its possessor, for good or ill. When we live, Consciousness is mostly (though never entirely) focused within or upon the physical body and its senses. But during trance, and after physical death, the Consciousness returns to its proper vehicle, which is the SOUL. What is the Purpose of the Higher Degrees?

This is a question which we have been asked in various forms over the years, and we believe it to be an important question to answer.

In this lean economic period, when families are struggling to feed themselves, economies are in crisis, and food banks are becoming a necessity, it is quite reasonable to ask why anyone would spend precious time and essential monies on joining an Order, and attending a Lodge or Sanctuary.

The matters of the Body and physical life are crucial, and need to be attended to - this is irrefutable. But the Mind, Soul and the Spirit - the truest sources of happiness, understanding, peace, inspiration, resiliance, strength, willpower, morality and ethics - require just as much attention and care as the domestic and professional life; sometimes even more.

For some, a simple faith in God is enough. For others, strength of will and the energy of the battle sustains them. For others, it is the love of family or friends. For others still, it is nature. We all partake of some or all of these levellers of human life. For some, however, there is a deeper and more existential requirement; a Spiritual requirement, which necessitates the seeking out of Initiation. This 'calling' is compelling and life-changing, regardless of the Path to which one is drawn - and it can sometimes be more than one throughout a lifetime.

Those of us drawn irresistably to the Egyptian Rite are shown a clear and well-reasoned Path, with discrete stages, which we term Grades, or Degrees. If one wishes to aspire to the highest Spiritual Consciousness, one either needs fewer stages of longer duration, or many stages in a sequence which allows a steady comprehension of the ALL.

The Three Symbolic, or Craft, Degrees of Freemasonry are well attested, and do not need a further explanation; they are the Fundament of all forms of Masonry.

In the Higher Degrees of our Order, we work to develop in the following ways:

The College Degrees from the 4th to the 14th concern the ethics and morality of Masonry, the awakening of the Sphere (Aura), and the subtle or psychical senses. We work on this subtle aspect of our natures, with the benefit of a support system (the Lodge) and the guidance of our Senior Adepts who have trodden the Path before.

The R+C Degrees from the 15th to the 18th concern the knowledge of the Mystery Traditions, the awakening of the Heart, and joy, ethics and compassion. This is reaching to the core of our Humanity, where we find the Gateway to Divinity, because without a humanist and compassionate Heart, nothing higher may be attained.

The Hermetic Senate Degrees from the 19th to the 29th concern the practical study of Alchemy and Theurgy, the strengthening of the Will, and mental force, operative upon its own Plane. Having opened our Inner Powers, we now learn how to perfect their proper and ethical use.

The Supreme Council Degrees from the 30th to the 33rd concern the transmission of higher qabalistic and alchemical teachings, the awakening of the Soul, and the spiritual senses. The present incarnation of the Mason is understood in a newer, more expansive way, and this wider view from the perspective of an Expanded Consciousness allows other techniques and dimensions to be more easily and readily accessible. Once again, the Order does not cause this to happen - only the hard, honest Works of the Mason themselves can do this - but it facilitates the process with safety and support.

Having attained these - the Lesser Mysteries - the Greater and Supreme Mysteries are the natural progression for anyone who has attained this state, condition and level of knowledge. Beyond lies Understanding, Wisdom, and the Crown of the Arcana Arcanorum.

This is the purpose of our Order.
And this is the purpose of the Higher Degrees.

Get Out What You Put In

The Egyptian Masonic Order UK is comprised of Masters, Officers, Members and Candidates, each operating in their own modes and manners to perpetuate and support the Works of the Order, its Sanctuaries and Lodges. What we must always remember, obvious as it may appear, is that these are PEOPLE; individual bodies, minds and souls. Without people, no Order can exist, and no Masonic Work can be properly accomplished. It requires a group effort. It requires a collective investment, of time, attention, money and labour, without which neither an individual, nor the Order in general, may expect a return on investment.

Maintaining a healthy Order is a complex task. The following types of people make it harder:

There are the 'status-conscious' people who are attracted to the glamour of Egyptian Masonry and its High Degrees and, having an exaggerated sense of entitlement, expect to receive these Honours on request - all of which are representative of Internal States which must be attained for the Degree to have any significance whatsoever - and yet will neither demonstrate their readiness for the accolade, nor a willingness to bear the responsibilities which come with the Degree, nor even to provide assistance with the Works of the Order which honours them. It is a Vice of Fire.

There are people who hop from Order to Order, gathering Degrees and Titles, who consider themselves esoteric 'collectors'; they will often present the initiatic knowledge and training they have gained, through the kind sacrifice of an Order and its Tutors, as if it was their own Genius alone which assisted them. They give back to Humanity vicariously, if at all, but their chalice is full of poison. Gossip, trouble, division, political extremism, anti-institutional narratives, cult of personality, populism, and ugly rumour often accompany such persons, and sometimes they are the source. It is a Vice of Air.

There are the passive characters, esoteric 'audience members' who are not necessarily bad in themselves, but because of their passivity and lack of accountability, become the enablers of those less moral or trustworthy, sometimes even defending the indefensible because of a tendency towards moral and social avoidance. They appear to walk in a form of moral and esoteric slumber. It is a Vice of Earth.

There are the 'non-committal' people who believe that an Order runs itself; they conveniently forget the importance of paying their Dues on time - an Order is a service provider like any other - rarely showing loyalty and respect to their Fellows, seldom giving reasonable assistance to the Lodge and its Officers, and not even showing up to Meetings and Lessons with regularity. It is a Vice of Water.

And of course, there are the common or garden 'trouble makers' - the narcissists, the attention seekers, the bullies, the envious, the hyper-competitive, the elitists and bigots, the would-be sabateurs. When ignored and tolerated, they set fire to the Temple like Herostratus. When promoted, they destroy good works and right relations. When challenged on their aberrant behaviour, they reward Love with malice. These are the Vicious Spirits, the Ruffians, and the Breakers of the Pillar.

These types of people are burning a bridge, whilst still standing upon it.

They must seek the organisations or situations which suit them better. There are many other viable options out there in the Masonic and esoteric world - independent study, academic collectives, informative websites, various courses and study degrees, smaller practice groups, religious institutions, published texts and workbooks, therapy, counselling, healing retreats, etc. - and perhaps these offer what such people need. They must identify whatever causes the gross imbalance in their Elemental Natures, and find a way to heal and correct it before it harms others.

The collective Works of an Esoteric and Masonic Order are not suited to them.

The glorious rewards of Egyptian Masonry are many, and splendid, but the whole point of an Order is to work towards them as a Fraternity and Sorority; a human collective.

Egyptian Masonry provides a traditional and perennial framework, not only for gaining mastery over the various aspects of the human experience, and making a systematic study of all aspects of the Western Mystery Tradition, but also a Path towards Spiritual Illumination and Energetic Evolution. In the form of an Order and Lodge, it provides the welcome addition of mutual support and security.

Let every individual find what suits them best.

How To Approach An Order

Dear Friends,

We feel the following suggestions on HOW TO APPROACH AN ORDER may prove helpful to some of those who are seeking to join any of the Masonic and Esoteric Orders.

For those who do not know these things, we hope this helps you on the road to success.

There are those who already know these things, and practice them; we salute you.

For those who know these things, but fail to practice them - the EYE is upon you.

HOW TO APPROACH AN ORDER:

- An Order and Lodge is a business and an occult society, not merely a social club, so you should be seeking much more than dining, socialising, status and social mobility

- Order administration is always busy, so be prompt and clear in your email responses; please don't expect to be chased up (you should be doing the chasing for such an important opportunity), and remember that YOU are the unknown person, so the Order has a right to expect proof of integrity and dedication

- Please be clear, formal and respectful in your emails and communications from the outset - curtness and brevity always appear arrogant and unprofessional, and verbosity and self-praise give the impression of egotism and insecurity; incoherent waffle is even worse! So, treat your communication with an Order in the same way you would treat a serious job application with a large company

- Lodge and Temple Meetings take weeks of arrangement and rehearsal, running to a tight schedule planned out several years in advance, and Officers have studied long hours to become skilled in their roles as Initiators, so be prompt, be respectful, be present, and be serious about your chosen Path

- The Senior Officers, Lodge Masters, PMs, Sages, Grand Priors, Secretaries, Hierophants and Grand Masters are in those roles for a reason; ALWAYS respect the role, even when you know the person well

- Members of an Order are always carefully selected, and acceptance is not guaranteed, so don't procrastinate, cavil or equivocate before, during or after Interview, and never disappoint an Order which has accepted you

- To be clear: if the business of family, profession, health or unavoidable delay keeps you away from any Meeting, or you have too much to manage (we all know life sometimes clusters with events), this is always forgiveable; but you must inform the Order and Lodge at the earliest possible convenience

- All Orders have a Dues and Fees system to keep things up and running, like any business; so pay your Dues and Fees in full, on time, and with gratitude (because the Order and Lodge are arranging all of this so you don't have to, and the Membership benefits are rare, and therefore of high-value)

- All Masonic and Esoteric Orders are more connected than may first appear on the surface, so any rudeness, impropriety or abuse is most unwise

- Sometimes we need to change paths and organisations to find the people and practices that fit us best, but constant hopping from Order to Order, or Lodge to Lodge, without clear reasons, will arouse a justifiable suspicion

- An Order is there for ALL, and not just for YOU; so do not apply to join ANY Order unless you are willing to: fulfil your commitments (even from before the Interview stage), turn up to every Meeting to which you are summoned, pay your Dues, be respectful to other Members, remain loyal to your Oaths and to the Leaders and Seniors, study and practice to attain competence, and contribute wholeheartedly to the Works

- Even with an Order such as ours - where there is a great deal of ritual, material and study - you still get out of Masonry and Esotericism whatever you put in; dedication, punctuality, good-will and excellence are still the best ways to show appreciation for the trust an Order or Lodge has placed in you as a Member

- Solitary study will always be necessary, even in an Order or Lodge

- The phenomenon of the Egregore is something which cannot be underestimated

- Kindness, forbearance, enthusiasm and humility are not weaknesses, unless viewed through the eyes of sociopathy

- Accept the fact that human organisations will always be imperfect, but they cannot achieve relative excellence without your personal assistance; don't complain, contribute!

- Don't seek out Badges, Honours or Higher Degrees; let them seek you out, and find you; have patience, and remember that ambition should always be 1/4 in ratio to generosity, and curiosity always 1/3 in ratio to wonder and gratitude

The Nature of Our Mysteries

The Purpose of an Order

It is a principle of the genuine Esoteric Mysteries that "the end is shown in the beginning".

Every true Mystery Tradition shows the general intention of its Mysteries in the very first Degree or Grade, so that the subconscious of the new Initiate is given a form of esoteric 'road map' for their forthcoming journey.

For this reason, the EMO UK made the decision to reveal on this public website which aspects of the Western Mystery Tradition - Inner and Appendant Orders, etc. - that we convey to our Membership. We want our Applicants to have a clear picture of our style and approach. However, we never discuss the structure, content, exposition or practices of our Order Mysteries publically, nor the origin and nature of our regimens, rituals, curriculum, transmissions, resources, Hierophany, Hierarchy, or Magistery. We use a legally-binding NDA to protect this information, as well as the identity of our Membership, and the locations of our Sanctuaries. We still conceal far more than we reveal .

There is a very good reason for this.

Intellectually, one can study the documents and manuscripts of the esoteric tradition oneself; most of the exoteric and written content of the Mysteries is now freely available online or from museums, and has been translated into several languages. There is a new generation of independent esoteric scholars out there, providing new authorship and a solid academic spine to the Occulture of the contemporary West. There are also official institutions providing degrees in the academic study of Western Esotericism. We salute their efforts.

Despite this new spirit of academic acceptance, independent practice and individual effort, there is still a need for the discipline, resource, collective power, and socio-mystical unity of Masonic and Esoteric Orders - there is still a need for the Holy Secret.

Secrecy is not, and was never intended to be, about the concealment of primary sources or essential information. Nor is Silence about bigotry, elitism or exclusion, for any person of good report may join us.

Silence and Secrecy are about maintaining the psychic seal of the Egregore, preserving the Magical Circle or Sphere , and the protection of the Hermetic Vessel . They are about the protection of individual identities, and the unique intra ordem techniques, practices and tutorial of our EMO UK.

Thought - especially emotionalised thought - may be understood to operate in a manner akin to a virus, being able to infect and affect individuals and groups, and to be transmitted among them. This formative and influential power of Thought is a Key of the Mysteries, and its conception is fundamental to any understanding of esoteric practice. The horrors made possible through its corruption or misuse are readily seen in the tragic events of human history. In any healthy functioning Order, it is essential to keep the nature, flow, and current of Thought as pure, compassionate, healthy, spiritual and ennobling as possible. Holy Silence and Order Secrecy are essential for the preservation of the occult integrity of the Lodge and the Order.

We ward ourselves and our Homes. We guard our Brethren. We tyle our Lodges. We encircle our Sanctuaries.

Our Consistory and Pyramid are in the heights, inaccessible to the profane.

We meet in Secrecy, we listen in Silence, and we speak only when the Word is given. We work, and we pray.

This is the nature of our Mysteries.

Instant Enlightenment Does Not Exist!

There is a current movement that is choosing to turn away from the overwhelming onslaught of social media, invasive commerce, and the technological control of reality - turning off mobiles and PCs, taking time to converse and socialise in person; enjoying the natural sounds and sights of the environment; interacting with a physical pasttime, art, craft or pursuit; relegating technology to its proper status as a passive tool, and nothing more. We are very happy to see this.

Many people are harassed into an accelerated pace of life, crammed with distractions and pressures, with less and less time for quiet, peace, solitude, silence, meaningful company, or inward contemplation. This has increased the trend of 'instant gratification', and such a trend is the worst approach towards inward spiritual development.

Spirituality is a natural, gentle and organic process - it is seasonal, successive, graduated, and slow .

There are people who believe that they can pay for a year long, three-month, two-week, or even weekend spiritual course or meditative retreat, and expect to gain deep, enduring and expediently quick access to the Highest Spiritual Planes, as well as an understanding and comprehension of them, simply by their attendance. They pay for another's expertise, without realising that it is only their own hard work which will enable them to benefit from the guidance of any experienced teacher. There are even some who believe it wise to take all three Masonic Degrees in a day, or over a couple of days. So much is missed in these cases, and the subtle cannot be recognised under the veneer of the 'bucket list' approach to the Mysteries.

Spirituality in general, and Masonry in particular, is a cuisine , not a fast food. It takes time, cooking skill, dedication, quality ingredients, correct ambience, and a clientele that appreciates fine dining. It must be savoured , and time should be taken over its consumption. It is elegant, rather than expedient.

The True Path is one of at least one lifetime - those who appear to be gifted and who progress rapidly in the Mysteries are, invariably , the type for whom those Mysteries are not new ground. To attempt the Great Work requires humour, empathy, stamina, quietude, mental focus, environmental receptivity, humility, and patience and persistence above all. It is not a race, a competition, or a lifestyle accessory. The True Path is a mountaineering expedition, an exploration, a pilgrimage, and often, an adventure .

It is open to all; but even then, one must have a natural inclination towards it - enthusiasm combined with talent - to reap its subtle inward benefits. It is not a thing of material rewards (although many materially privileged people still seek it out as a higher priority than financial wealth), but of inward and interior wealth, which is Genius . It is the cultivation of the Seed of the Soul, in the compost of the Subconcious, the garden of the Persona, and under the solar rays of the Spirit. The Soul must gestate, absorb, break forth, sprout, breathe, grow, and flourish.

And, my friends, you must let Nature be your guide.

Take the long way home. Tread lightly. Enjoy the views. Stop for regular picnics. Be calm. Trust your Self.

The Tree of Life cannot be force-ripened.

Introducing KNEPH, Journal for the EMO UK

We are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of KNEPH, our new biannual journal for the EMO UK!

KNEPH will feature many articles and commentaries, on the Egyptian Rite as it is practised in our Order, and on Egyptian Masonry in general.

KNEPH will be released in March and September of every year, to coincide with the two pivotal rituals of the Egyptian Masonic calendar, the Rite of Awakening in Spring, and the Rite of Repose in Autumn.

KNEPH is not a continuation of the nineteenth-century publication "The Kneph" by John Yarker, but we have named our publication to honour the works of our illustrious predecessor, and will release it to continue our support of esoteric Egyptian Masonry in the UK and worldwide. The articles and features are suitable for interested members of the public, as well as Masons of other Obediences who may be interested to know more.

KNEPH will include pieces on Egyptian Gods, the Mansions of the Order, key details of Egyptian Masonic practice, quotations from venerable Past Masters, aspects of occultism and mysticism in the Egyptian Rite, and much more. There will be submissions from Members of the EMO UK, and we also accept submissions from Masonic academics and experts interested in sharing their knowledge.

KNEPH will be a free publication, available to our Facebook followers and subscribers.

The Throne of the Most Worshipful Master

The Rites of Installation

It gave us the greatest of pleasure to oversee the Installation of another worthy Member of our Order as the Most Worshipful Master (MWM) of the Grand Lodge. A new Light now occupies the Chair of Osiris and Solomon.

During the ceremony, all Members of the Symbolic Lodge of Egypt who are not Installed Masters are asked respectfully to retire; the Lodge of Installation is opened, and the new Master Elect is placed ceremonially in the Chair of the Master, which we also term the Throne of the East. This is done by either the Grand Master, an Installing Master with special dispensation to perform the duty, or by the current Most Worshipful Master, who then becomes the Immediate Past Master.

The Installation is a very private and mystical ceremony, which brings the new Master Elect - who is already a Member of our mystical 4th Degree - into a new company of Master Masons with peculiar responsibilities over the preservation and development of the Symbolic Rite of Egypt. Certain Masonic and Alchemical Secrets are conveyed to them, along with the new Annual Watchword of the coming year. They are now permitted to attend the Lodge of Installed Masters, to receive a Charter to open their own Daughter Lodge after their term of office should they so choose, and to assume the rulership of the Lodge for the next year.

Once the ceremony is completed, the Lodge of Installation is closed, the ordinary Lodge is resumed, and the Members are readmitted Degree by Degree, when the name of the new MWM is declared before them, and the Annual Watchword is disseminated.

This year was very special, as the ceremony was performed by the Most Illustrious Grand Master.

Our beloved Illustrious Sister, who held the Throne so diligently for the previous year, has now become our Immediate Past Master (IPM). We look forward to her kindly Light continuing to illuminate the Lodge from the East, and bring wisdom, peace and comfort among the Brothers, Sisters and Fellows of the Order.

We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful and powerful Rite, which nourishes, strengthens and uplifts every participant therein.

New Spirituality

Beyond Dogma: The Maturity of the Spirit

Information gathered by the Office of National Statistics from the 2021 census of England and Wales has revealed that almost 40% of people have "no religion", which has increased from approximately 25% in ten years. This suggests a national move away from conventional or dogmatic religion.

Of those who chose to write in their answer under the "any other religion" option, the largest groups identified their faith as "Paganism" "Spiritualism" and general "Spirituality", with a tenfold rise from 2011 in those identifying their faith as "Shamanism". This also suggests a greater interest in the more grounded, interpersonal, and mystical aspects of traditional spirituality and inner work.

Many people are searching for a more personal, nurturing and direct relationship with their spirituality and spiritual life; a grounded, respectful and rational connection to the divine , the mystical or the numinous , which also supports morality, ethics, contemporary values, and individual empowerment. We believe that the human tendency towards spirituality, mysticism, meritocratic hierarchy (all are equal , but not everyone can be, do or know everything ), and religious contemplation is a natural one , but that it should be explored and enjoyed without oppression, tyranny, immorality or elitism (let those who are ready to receive, receive in full ). Although atheism is an understandable reaction against the tyranny of religious oppression, and the moral confusion of the world, it isn't the only response.

We at the EMO UK believe that Egyptian Freemasonry supplies exactly these needs. Our Order is not stuck in the oppressive past, nor does it show favour to one particular gender, religion, philosophy or demographic. For Spirituality to be worth pursuing, it must be for all, and for the good of all . To ensure this, we are committed to particular values.

We initiate all genders into our Order, because we believe that our Mysteries are beneficial to all.

We admit people of any Faith or Religious inclination, including those who cannot define what they believe, but admit to there being "Something" greater than themselves - whether defined as an Intelligence, a Spirit, a Presence, or some mysterious aspect of Human Consciousness and Energy. Among us in the EMO UK, we have Christian, Muslim, Pagan, Gnostic, Jewish, Druidic, Shamanic and Native Priesthood working in harmony and joy together, linked not only by Masonry, but by the uniting presence and essence of Soul and Spirit in all human Faiths.

Our Works are ethical and moral, but they are also openly spiritual and mystical, using our symbolism, ritual and techniques to search together for greater Spiritual Truth and Authenticity.

We support Charitable Works, and the compassionate and supportive treatment of others.

We believe that the GAOTU gave us the Tools to make a most beautiful and perfectible world, but that we were also given the personal and collective responsibility to use those Tools effectively , working and building together to raise the Temple of Humanity in which dwells an Undying Spirit of Love, Goodness, Light and Life.

We see Freemasonry (of all Rites and Obediences) as UNIVERSAL; the best chance and greatest means by which Humanity as a whole - every nation, every culture, every individual - can achieve harmony, community, fulfilment, and abiding peace.

Masonic Communion

The Levels of our Spiritual Communion

During a late night conversation with my familial sister - our conversations are always enlightening and entertaining - she reminded me of the crucial import of these Masonic Rites for giving a Malkuthic, earthly structure and support for the communion of souls ; although each individual is on a unique spiritual journey - their Path always different from that of another - the processes of spiritual evolution are still the same, with the same experiential stages and states of illumination.

The real use of the Masonic Mansions of the Order is to provide havens at these different stages of ascent upon the Mystic Mountain; havens where Brothers and Sisters of similar vibration can commune, share, study, and offer mutual support. The Degrees may then be understood and experienced as portals, milestones and signposts along the way which leads to a permanent expansion of Consciousness and Existence, something which they are also designed to potentiate.

In the EMO UK, the Degrees are much more than a shallow hierarchy for badge-collecting and dusty elitism. We progress our Initiates meritocratically, with the requirement of various proofs at every stage of the Masonic journey. In this way, those who attain a particular Key Degree, or who are received into a particular Mansion of the EMO UK, will find themselves in the company of those who share not only a similar Masonic education, but also a sympathetic state of mind, soul and perception.

As Consciousness expands, it can be very difficult to express or explain the results of this process to those not on the Path, or whom have only just begun their own Masonic Journeys. We need to be around like-minded persons with a shared set of references to help find our balance, and to remain grounded as we progress. Those with more experience will also be able to share this with those ready to receive it, thus avoiding the risk of gerontocracy, moribund culture, or spiritual avarice.

Within each Mansion and each Degree, we find a set of common interests and pursuits among the Members: 25th Degree Initiates are usually practising some form of laboratory alchemy or spagyry; 18th Degree Initiates are enjoying a chivalrous communion as part of a mystical Knighthood; 13th Degree Initiates are exploring the mystical lore behind the Masonic literature; 9th Degree Initiates are rising above the lower forms of psychism; 6th Degree and Mark Initiates are exploring greater intimacy with their Creator; and 4th Degree Initiates are commencing our Theurgy and inward study.

Each Degree is important, and is presented differently, opening up new vistas of perception and philosophy with each new passage into a Higher Degree.

In a very real sense, the Path is eternal, and even the very highest Degree is but another DOOR.

Our Use of the Terms Lodge, Temple and Sanctuary

In the EMO UK, whose main tradition is the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Mizraim, we use the Masonic terms LODGE, TEMPLE and SANCTUARY.

The LODGE is a popular and well-known word used in Freemasonry to describe the group of Masons who 'hold a Lodge'. In a sense, the term Lodge is the collective noun for a group of Masons. Over time, the term has come to be applied to the place or location in which a Masonic Lodge is held, but this can sometimes be a source of confusion. Therefore, we use terms such as HALL or TEMPLE to describe the meeting place of Masons, in which they hold their various Lodges.

In our tradition, the term TEMPLE is used in this way, as a description of the meeting place ; it also carries a sacred and mystical significance too, for although our Mysteries are secular (as opposed to religious in the strictest sense), they are still considered holy, sacred and mystical, our Faith being Universal, our conception of Divinity being the GAOTU. Unlike other Orders, you may be of any personal religious belief to enter our Higher Degrees.

In common parlance, the terms 'Lodge' and 'Temple' are sometimes used interchangeably among Members when describing the room in which the Lodge Meeting is held, but the term LODGE is always the correct term for the 'body of the Lodge' which is both the company and the collective fraternal-sororal bond of Masons.

We use the term SANCTUARY in a very different manner. The SANCTUARY is the higher organisation of the Order which protects, administrates and conveys the Higher Degrees. It encompasses the Rite from the 4th Degree upwards, plus the Additional Rites, Appendant Orders and Inner Orders; in fact, all that exists beyond the limits of the Symbolic or 'Craft' Lodge of the first Three Degrees. The Grand Sanctuary of the EMO UK, in accordance with the structure of the Rites of Memphis, is arranged into Nine Mansions , of which the Symbolic Lodge is considered to be either the Tenth Mansion , or the Symbolic Porchway of the Sanctuary which lies above it.

The SANCTUARY is also a place of security, safety and protection for all Master Masons who are invited to enter therein, for the Lesser, Greater and Supreme Mysteries of Freemasonry may only be studied and practised in a condition of sanctity and privacy, by those ready for the necessary commitment. Invitation is only extended to those who, in their attendance of the Symbolic Lodge, have shown the appropriate diligence, enthusiasm, loyalty, obedience, respect, comprehension, and fraternal-sororal good-will towards their fellow Seekers. The labour of the Great Work is joyous, but it is exacting, and there must always be Harmony between the Members before it can be attempted.

Our EMO UK Grand Sanctuary is located in London UK, and maintains the Rites and Traditions of the EMO UK, which are explained for the public on the relevant sections of our website.

Ultimately, an Order is composed of its Members. It is the collective work of people . The tradition is perennial, but sometimes Orders rise and fall, or they only open their Portals of Entrance for certain seasons of time. There is much patience needed even for successful Candidates; if you are interested in joining us - once you have made your mind up and resolve to do so - do not delay.

Entering the Interiority of the Masonic Temple

Within the EMO UK, all of our Candidates are not only taken through a Masonic ritual, with all its attendent symbolism, lectures, actions and reactions; they are also brought into the entry-level of a very particular state of awareness, consciousness, and activity.

In the Symbolic Lodge of Egypt, we call this, in a general sense, the Interior State .

The Sacred Mysteries as they survive in the Rites of Memphis-Mizraim, are divided into three sections - Symbolic, Lesser and Greater - for the purpose of graduated learning and the steady integration of both knowledge and experience in Egyptian Masonry. Nobody would reasonably expect to commence their education in a subject at the doctorate level; they would begin with preparatory learning, a phase of research, and examination to confirm their comprehension, before progressing to more complex aspects of study. The Sacred Mysteries are the same, for this and many other reasons besides.

In Egyptian Masonry, we are working to expand the Consciousness and unleash the secret potential within the Human Constitution; not only the intellect, or the morals, but the Body (in a holistic sense which includes intellect, emotion and persona ), Soul, and Spirit. Such a magnificent undertaking requires all due care and circumspection.

The First Degree of Apprentice is perhaps the most important of all the Degrees of Masonry. It is the true 'first step', the initial entrance and courageous journey, into a place, a state, a company, and a world which had previously been concealed. Make no mistake, the important 'secrets' of our Craft are well concealed indeed.

Even those who research Freemasonry and Masonic history, read the rituals they can find online, study what secrets they can ferret out, are still blind to the Reality of Masonry; a Reality which can only be communicated and experienced directly through the perfomance of the Rites, in the open Lodge. Masonry is something one does , not something one reads . It is a perfect and highly sophisticated combination of subject and object . This power to produce change is evident to every Mason who has walked the Path of Freemasonry, regardless of their Rite, Order or Obedience; it is even more pronounced in Esoteric Masonry, and greatly so in Egyptian Masonry.

When our Candidates come into the EMO UK, they soon realise that they are commencing a two-handed study ; they are not only learning the rituals, symbols and motions of the external Lodge, but also that which is happening within themselves , within the environment, and within those around them. All of our EMO UK Lodges are constituted, opened and operated in this "two-handed" manner, for our Mysteries, on all levels, are both Exterior and Interior .

There is a Hidden Portal. A Narrow Gateway, concealed behind the apparent, the obvious, the superficial.

Our Members are those who have discovered this Portal, and made a brave ingression, which is simultaneously an egression. Once through this Portal, and set upon the Path, there is no turning back.

In a very real sense, those who seek our Lodge of Egypt, and bravely enter in, come not forth again.

Don't Complain, Transform

If it feels wrong, it is wrong - make it right!

There has been a dramatic fall in Membership of many Esoteric Orders, including Freemasonry.

Younger people are joining, yet don't appear to be finding the guidance, support and illumination they need; they feel excluded or patronised, and certainly don't react well to gerontocratic demands for authoritarian respect from those who clearly think living longer is enough to earn it. Older Masons blame the fall off of Membership on social changes, on a lack of patience and attention-span in younger people, on economic pressures, and various other things which seem to point in every direction away from themselves.

Perhaps the answer lies somewhere between these two extremes.

There are problems which many of us have observed in some Orders - ego battles, divisive politics, power struggles, moribund lodge cultures, elitism, or worse - and many of us have been failed by the destructive results of these problems. Some conflict is always possible, but without strong leadership, clear boundaries, self-awareness and consummate humility, many of these conflicts are blown out of all proportion.

Personality differences are natural, but they need to be managed, and caused to be mutually supportive rather than divisive. Harmony is paramount, and the worst influences within any Lodge are the 'crazy maker', the 'authoritarian' and the 'narcissist'.

Creating any successful group is a form of juggling, constant recentring and course correction. Nobody is perfect, but this doesn't mean we have an excuse not to improve our behaviour, our understanding, and our appreciation of the consequences of our behaviour to ourselves and others. Those who choose to avoid this personal responsibility, those who refuse to criticise themselves, will not accept even the kindest criticism from others, but are keen to dish corrections out unbidden - they do not belong in the company of Masons.

Many of our Members, including myself, have experienced great joy and fraternal support, but also bitter disappointment and disillusionment, with the conditions and behaviours we have found in those places we have formerly visited, or to which we once belonged. We could complain forever, and waste Precious Time fighting point-proving battles with those unwilling to see the point (many confuse this with 'fighting the good fight', but this is not necessarily the same thing).

But we decided to do something more constructive.

We decided not to complain, but to transform .

First, to transform ourselves - our expectations, our boundaries, our behaviour, our choices, our actions.

Secondly, to transform our direction . The EMO UK has been formed to be as harmonious as possible with the contemporary society in which we live, without compromising the sanctity and integrity of the Ancient Mysteries, which are formed from the collective spiritual experiences and philosophical revelations of Human Genius over millennia. It is people who form Lodges and Orders and sustain the Mysteries, in communion with the Divine.

A Lodge is, and should be, a perfect manifestation of people power .

And we are only people . We may fail, we may struggle.

But we are happy to know that we have chosen to ACT, for through wise action comes FAVOURABLE CHANGE.

In this, the Divine Powers may provide the support and abundance that formerly had been withheld, or gone unnoticed.

To the Young, we say never give in . Be true to your Soul's Path. The Elders may have been here longer, but they are not living your life, in your era, with your particular struggles. Wisdom is in every Heart, even if it slumbers. But be patient with the Elders, and the Tradition, even if they seem calcified . Pearls of Wisdom are created in no other way, and you will find them beautiful, carrying your own Reflection.

To the Elders, we say never give up . Share your Wisdom, without exception. This is a new era , which you may never truly understand, for as an older person, you are part of a retreating wave. But that Wave carries pearls, and treasures. Share them, for they have been gathered for no other reason. You are nothing but the Water, and the Spirit.

Let both the Young and the Elders be refreshed in the Perennial Tides of the Ocean.

How Egyptian is the Egyptian Rite?

The Egyptian Elements in Our Rites

The word 'Egyptian' as used in our Egyptian Masonry must not cause confusion.

There are some who have asked if we are a continuation of the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt; the unbroken line of a surviving cultus of the Mystery Religions.

The answer to this is both 'yes' and 'no'.

Let us first consider our 'no' (without wishing to appear equivocal!).

The history of Europe and the Mediterranean, with the many battles, empires, political turmoil and religious persecution, has made it very difficult for any sacred culture to preserve itself in situ without any admixture, variation or erosion, due to the aforementioned struggles. There are exceptions, traces, and survivals in part , usually in family traditions, folk culture, or the practices of isolated peoples. But even these have absorbed or been affected by commixture and change, both ancient and modern. Purity really is a myth , if applied to the material world.

Before a certain period in the fifteenth century when the 'Old Charges' were written, there was no practice which we could reliably call 'Freemasonry', even if former rituals and orders might have existed from which many of our practices are drawn (and we are sure they did exist).

Freemasonry is properly a child of the late Renaissance and Enlightenment period, when the practical but mysterious Rites of the Operative Guild Masons began to admit Speculative Masons, who did not work in stone , but applied the philosophy developed in the Operative Masonic Rites to themselves and their morals . There was a public revival of interest in the classical religions, traditions and philosophies of the ancient past. The Speculative Masons saw, in the mysterious Geometry and symbolic interpretations of Architecture, a manner of philosophical conveyance ; a tradition of encoding meaning for a curious populus, many of whom were illiterate. They also found survivals of earlier cultural and hermetic practices which had been preserved from the Medieval period, under the works of Alchemy, Astrology, Pansophy, Neo-Platonism, Gnosticism, Hermeticism, and the mystical Christian tradition which we now call Rosicrucianism. The early Grand Masters collated this, and Masonry as we know it was born.

The history since those times - the Ancients versus the Moderns, the exclusion or inclusion of Higher Degrees, the formation of Grand Lodges, the divisions across borders and languages, etc. - has been complex and colourful, and not a little contentious.

Make no mistake - Freemasonry is certainly a philosophical-spiritual practice, and was intended to be so from its very earliest origins. It is only the eroding effect of religious bias, Modernism/Post-Modernism and incipient 'scientism' and 'logical positivism' which have distanced some Masons from the heart and soul of the system and its Ineffable Symbols. In the EMO UK, we adhere to the original spirit and intention of the Degrees, and see Masonry as a School of Ethics, Philosophy, and Esoteric Spirituality - a Gateway to the Mysteries.

However, the answer to the first question is also 'yes'. There is a continuity of Egyptian IDEAS, of Egyptian PRACTICES, and of Egyptian SYMBOLISM, which continues to survive even when the originators of those symbols and ideas are long-dead. The preservation of the many texts and manuscripts of the Classical, Antique and Medieval periods has allowed the Ancient Knowledge to remain perennial. With the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, the mysteries of the hieroglyphs were finally revealed after many centuries, and the sudden enthusiasm for Egyptology and Ancient Egyptian culture swept Europe and influenced many Masons in their development of their rituals.

Egyptian references have always appeared in the Rite of Mizraim from the early eighteenth century, especially the mention of the trilogy of Isis, Osiris and Horus. The reason for this is probably the survival of knowledge of these deities and their cults of worship in the classical references perpetuated in Naples, from which the Rite originates. Elements of Pythagoreanism, Neo-Platonism and Gnosticism have also entered the Rite through the same route. There is also a strain of Indo-European culture which was brought into the Higher Degrees via the Rite of Memphis , which connects the philosophy of Brahminism and Zoroastrianism with that of Greek Philosophy, Norse Religion and Celtic Tradition as a continuity of a more ancient Source of Wisdom. Some writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have used this to promote a misguided form of anthroposophical Aryanism, but this is not really the intention behind our Rite's Universality. ALL spiritual faiths and traditions may be (and indeed are ) included in the many High Degrees of Memphis-Mizraim, demonstrating the underlying TRUTH - the Universal MASONRY - which is found in all global examples of true spirituality, faith and philosophy, regardless of the nation in which it has flowered.

Ideas can never be killed; they can only evolve. Spiritual experience is perennial and consistent, because it is True.

In this sense, the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Mizraim is most certainly a spiritual, philosophical and aesthetic continuation of the Ancient Rites of Amenhotep, Manetho, Zozimus, Iamblichus and Orpheus. It is a mighty and unstoppable River fed by these Silver Streams of Archaic Genius.

We hope to sustain this Order and its Mansions so that all Genuine Seekers may drink therefrom.

An Excellent First Year

An excellent first year for the EMO UK

The EMO UK has had an excellent and encouraging first Masonic year here in the UK.

Since our Grand Lodge Consecration last November, we have been meeting regularly, in joy and harmony, in our meeting place in the heart of London, UK.

Our Membership has not only grown organically and steadily, but we are delighted by the quality of Candidates and Affiliating Brethren whom we are fortunate to count among us!

We have Passed and Raised several Candidates, affiliated a number of Master Masons who have expressed their interest in the practice and study of the Egyptian Rites of our Order, and we have enjoyed the presentation of several Lectures in open Lodge on a variety of esoteric and hermetic subjects, such as the presence of Alchemy in the Three Degrees, the variations of Lodge layouts between various Symbolic Rites, the application of the Masonic Tools to Human Consciousness, the themes of Death and Resurrection, and more.

We are very fortunate to have a Grand Lodge culture which perfectly combines humour and joy with respectful sobriety of Labour; the Brothers and Sisters of the Order constitute a wonderful collection of Minds, Hearts and Souls, eager to explore together the deep Mysteries and high Philosophy of the Ancient and Primitive Rites of Memphis-Mizraim.

The year has not been without its challenges, and there has been a great deal of hard academic work involving translations, editorials, curation and comparison of works, the composition of adminstrative documentation, building our digital infrastructure, and the collation of our wonderful Masonic Curriculum and its various Handbooks, Lectures, rituals and exercises. Our studies are profound and far-reaching, but we also seem to have a great deal of laughter and good-will as we work together, along with profound revelations into the nature and origins of the Rites and Rituals. The Divine Power of the GAOTU, the Neteru of Old Egypt, and the Universe itself have most certainly been on our side this year, and a solid Foundation Stone has been lain.

We have also had the great pleasure of conveying the 33rd Degree to a most worthy and worshipful Doctor and Brother of our Order, as well as preparing for the continued Works of our many Inner Orders. The energy is high, and the enthusiasm is unwavering!

At the time of the Autumnal Equinox - which we call the Repose of Nature - we successfully opened the first College of Perfection of our Order in the UK, and several worthy Brethren were elevated to the 4th Degree. A Secret Transmission was conveyed to them, and the potency of the ritual was tangible to all.

This November sees our Installation of a new Master into the Chair, and the commencement of our Lodge of Installed Masters, where we convey the secret theurgical and alchemical practices of our Symbolic Lodge.

In the year to come, we anticipate another Passing, another Raising, and several welcome Affiliations. We will be opening in increasingly Higher Degrees through the College of Perfection and R+C Chapter . We are also ready to commence our expansion, which we hope will result in more EMO UK Lodges opening up in other parts of the UK. We are also ready to respond to any requests from Independent Lodges for Regularisation with us; even interested groups of non-Masons who wish to pursue the study and practice of Egyptian Masonry may apply to us for guidance and assistance in starting up a Triangle (minimum of three persons) or a Lodge (five or more) under our Jurisdiction.

We look forward to welcoming more sympathetic and enquiring Souls among us, to assist in the construction of the Temple Not Made With Hands.

Welcome to THE CUBIC STONE: a new noticeboard page for the EMO UK.

THE CUBIC STONE is designed as a public interface for the EMO UK, to share some more information about our activities as we work and build. We are a living, breathing, functional Order of the Egyptian Rite, composed of real people meeting regularly, and having a really constructive and joyous time. In the last year we have become increasingly busy!

In response to the many requests for information about the EMO UK and its Works, we decided to start this Noticeboard for dealing specifically with the activities of our Order and our Lodges. Now, our enquirers may learn about our Masonic activities without the distractions which abound in the more public examples of social media.

We value privacy and discretion in our Order; although any Member may openly declare themselves as such if they choose, we do not permit the identity of any Member to be revealed by another, without their express permission. We also guard our transmissions and rituals closely. Our Members each sign a legally-binding Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) as well as a Joining Form . This is not for the purpose of willful obscurantism; it is to protect our Works, and the privacy and identity of our beloved Members, many of whom choose to join us sub rosa . For these reasons, we will also uphold this anonymity in our public communiques.

Nonetheless, we wish to share something of our Works and our approach with interested parties, and will do so here. As we are a private Order, our only interest is in working the Egyptian Rite and our other Traditions in peace and harmony. We are not interested in the heady world of social commentary, political intrigue, academic posturing, or keyboard wars; for this reason, we have disabled comments.

All those who are interested in our Works, who have a genuine curiosity about the Egyptian Rites of Masonry, who wish to apply to join us, or who merely wish to make an intelligent and respectful enquiry, are free to contact us directly via the links provided. The CUBIC STONE is a further extension of the Perfect Ashlar (according to our Tradition), where the CUBE of Perfected Matter (the Square expressed in three dimensions) is surmounted by the PYRAMID of Manifested Spirit (the Triangle descending upon the Square), thus rendering the Perfect Stone .
